Business Insights from Sleepless Nights: Writing as a Tool for Thought and Growth

View Original Handwritten Notes

There are points and shapes. And yet, the shapes cannot represent the points of which they are composed of.

This is the illusion, I suppose.

We can not envision our own authentic self as we truly are.

Sometimes the writing flows so well I forget to add the date.

There is something empowering when you can’t sleep—to get up and write. Or work on a house project. Or finish something.

The Curling Pages and the Flow of Thought

What I’m really wondering is—why are these notebook journal pages curling?

As I’m writing, they are curling inward. Is it the ink or the dry temperature or—

I do believe the ink may have something to do with it.

Think about identifying the things you value most—what makes for a good life—and incorporating that into writing.

But then again, careful not to bring in rules or thought structure to free writing.

It is fine and should be part of your disciplined practice to generate content for the business and as a creative outlet. But one focused and with parameters.

This free writing may serve as both writing practice and working to tap into the raw brain stuff with as little processing as possible to capture a stream.

Because writing is a higher level of creation and communication, that makes it a wonderful tool for interacting with the mind in an artistic manner.

The language and lettering become the wave and board as our author writes another sunset surfing.

So AI says it is both the pressure and ink and the thin paper. (The curling.)

If the situation is a real problem, I might just need slightly heavier paper. But I do love the size and simplicity of a full page, where I can ride the words like they were incoming waves and not even notice how my pen makes its way down the page.

That is the essence of writing. Capturing. Releasing.

It also requires a certain level of action and relaxed body and breathing to sustain the effort and keep the connection flowing.

A few sneezes, and I am easily off track.

Writing as Practice, Business, and Structure

In both thinking about my life and creating through writing, the experience itself becomes cathartic—part of the entire process.

There is no reason these journals couldn’t be used as practice for a business that is generating content.

If that content is also used and published in a timely manner, how useful would that be?

What might I want to write about when it pertains to focused writing?

What are the areas that are distinctly different?

From a financial health perspective, you have to picture things also much like a system—income and expenses categorized, creating budgets that can then be quantified, targeted, and adjusted.

For the income portion, it should be noted—the income generated by investment and benefits of, say, a business and its income on taxes.

What this means is the broken-down paycheck tells a more elaborate story of income and should be itemized in a budget.

At what point is a budget useful, and when is too much… too much?

You can flex the budget in different ways to shine a light on whatever is needed.

But also, when it feels like something isn’t going into a category and feeling right, it could be time to consider another category.

Time, Writing, and Conscious Capturing

I’m not sure how many pages I’ve written or hours I’ve sat here writing, but both the time, effort, and outcome feel high value.

For some reason, everything in life becomes more valuable than work.

But it does take discipline.

5 pages are a sizable amount of text. A good body of work. A signifier of activity in the mind and the acknowledgment of time passing through the recording of events.

A tool for capturing conscious and subconscious thought, particularly when writing at odd hours.

It is good to work on handwriting, consistency, breath steadiness, and body relaxation—to get a quality sample of the most raw brain flow stuff.

To drift along the ocean of consciousness and see what we occasionally drift into.

Words are such a joy to work with.

The palette of the writer is the choice and order of words—to convey whatever content they so desire.

5 AM Reflections and the Purpose of Writing

Now that we have reached 5 AM, that is a much more normal time to be up.

But hey—not bad to have written five pages over the last two sleepless hours.

Not sure why I am sleepless. I kept tossing and turning, then my nose was stuffy, then runny, then sneezes.

My body feels a tad tired from writing.

It is a long time to do such a practice. And at the end of today, it does feel a bit like doing marathon training—although it mostly has just been reflections on an active time and an exercise in development.

A structured way to have a thought outlet.

There are still quite a few topics I didn’t get to, and I don’t believe I ever got to where I wanted about directed writing.

I will have to come back to that another session.

Using Writing Time Wisely

So let’s say I’ve now gotten my free writing time in and want to think about how to use my writing time wisely.

What would the recommendation be?

Well, if the business is important, generating original content can be really important—much like other areas where you can bring a unique voice to whatever you work on.

Might as well just document the process of work and even like it if you wish.

No reason to limit yourself in that regard.

For work, the same advice is still pretty good. Document your process—both thought and work—to benefit others.

Only through hard work and constant effort on delivery can I truly be satisfied.

And when it comes to writing, that means material delivered fresh.

To have a reason to create original, quality writing—
That is as much an art form as it is a way of recording communication through language.

There is beauty in the way words are strung together.

A writer knows just how to do it.

That is what makes their voice unique.

That’s why I mostly find joy in free writing.

Because otherwise, you have to think too much.

The Day Moves Forward

The day

flies past into

the week until it is

washed up by the mouth and shore.

Did that vacation time go?

Can’t slip away so quick,

with time’s endless trek, relentless, regular, ever-present.

And yet… is it?

Or is it merely the fact that we measure it?
