But when I’m in exploration mode? When I’m prototyping or learning? When I can afford to experiment? That’s when I turn to Claude Code running across all my projects. Or GPT-5 on mobile for quick conceptual explorations.
It’s YOLO mode for code. Move fast, break things, learn and discover.
This isn’t a comprehensive testing of twenty-plus tools. It’s a pragmatic workflow that works. That fits into the rhythm of real development.
The key is knowing when to use which mode. Developing that intuition for when you need precision versus when you need velocity.
Instead of pretending I’ve systematically tested every tool, here’s a framework for making your own choices. Start by asking what your biggest daily friction point is. Where do you spend time on low-value work? What tasks drain your mental energy? What would you tackle if you had more time? Then evaluate tools based on how well they integrate with your existing workflow, the learning curve versus immediate value, the team adoption potential, and vendor stability and trajectory.

You’re mapping the territory of your current reality, identifying the rough patches where your energy drains away.
Week two is where you start the experiment.
Pick one AI tool. Any tool. Free tier is fine. Use it for whatever bothers you most from week one.
Don’t try to revolutionize everything at once.
Keep paying attention to the same things you noticed before. You’re testing a single hypothesis: does this specific tool help with this specific problem?
By week three, if things are going well, expand your usage carefully. Maybe two or three different ways of working with AI.
Focus on getting better at the collaboration itself. Developing that sense of when to ask for help and when to go it alone.
