THE REPS: a Plan 9 and OG Bobby Johnson rap over six Chopin etudes
Plan 9 and OG Bobby Johnson rap over six Chopin etudes: skip the hype, go to the dark room, put in the reps, and pick your own weight. CC BY 4.0.
Watch on YouTube. Chopin's etudes are not songs. Each
one is a single figuration, one way of moving the hand, repeated until it becomes
architecture. They are exercises. Reps.

So the bed under this record is six of them running at once, in C sharp minor, each
locked to the same harmony, added one layer at a time until the whole thing blooms.
The music makes the argument before anybody says a word.
Then Plan 9 says it out loud, and he is not in a good mood about it.
The argument
He is angry because people do not get it, and what they do not get is how good the
work is. Everybody sprints at the newest wave with no focus and no floor. They want
the ovation without putting in the time. The hype comes back every week wearing a
different suit.
None of that ever touched the only thing that works. Go to the dark room. Put in the
reps. That has not changed and it is not going to.
Then the film turns, and the turn is the reason it exists. You pick the work. You pick
the weight you can carry, how far you go, and what you are grinding toward. Nobody
hands you the number. The discipline stays the same, and where you point it is yours
to decide.
And the rep is never later. The rep is now.
The voices
Plan 9, the bunny, carries the argument. Half-time pocket for the verses, full double
time for the climax, all of it pitch-preserved so the words fly without the voice ever
turning into a chipmunk.
OG Bobby Johnson opens the record and takes the second verse, because roasting the
hype cycle was always the comedian's job and not the philosopher's. He answers Plan 9
in the gaps, and he doubles the tail of every hook line so each bar closes twice. Two
MCs, one of them a potato. He last shared a mic with Plan 9 on
Ollama Mama.
Anubis is the third presence, and he does not take bars. He passes judgment on them.
His liturgy is Kubernetes, and that is not a joke. A controller is a reconcile loop:
read the desired state, read the actual state, close the gap by one step, repeat
forever. That is this film's argument in an ops uniform. Pending, Running,
Terminating, Evicted already sounds like a funeral service. He just reads it as one.
If the idea of a cluster as a physical system is new to you,
AWS Is Math, Kubernetes Is Physics
is the long version.
The score
Built in ChipForge, a Python synthesis engine, from six Chopin etudes
refitted onto one key and one 16th-note grid:
- Op. 10 No. 1, the wide rising arpeggio waves
- Op. 25 No. 1, the Aeolian Harp shimmer
- Op. 10 No. 4, the perpetual-motion 16ths
- Op. 10 No. 12, the Revolutionary left hand, which owns the bass
- Op. 25 No. 11, Winter Wind, the chromatic descent
- Op. 25 No. 12, Ocean, the broken-chord sweep
The hero melody is Op. 10 No. 3, Tristesse. A single sine whispers it twice before the
drop ever lets it sing.
Chopin was studied for structure only. No audio was sampled and no recording was used.
Same approach as THE AUTOMATIC DREAM, which did it
with Bach, and CANTUS RAVE, which did it with Pärt.
The picture
Every frame is Python and PIL, drawn as a pure function of time and rendered on a
laptop with no GPU.
Behind the two MCs is the inside of a busy Kubernetes cluster: a namespace lattice,
pods churning on their own lifecycle clocks, a kubectl stream, reconcile arcs, a
forensics readout, and packet traces on real ballistic arcs. It wakes up in step with
the score, nearly bare at the open and at full density by the climax, the same way the
etude layers stack.
On the floor is a tally. One mark scratched per bar of music, 120 of them, adding up for
the entire film. It is the count made visible, which is the thing the hype crowd never
sees. By the last shot the floor is covered.
The bookends
A phosphor CRT, because that is what a control plane looked like before it was a web
console. It strobes on the beat, the title slams down through a chromatic split, and at
the end the tube collapses to a line and a dot.
The farewell is Greek. Kubernetes means helmsman. Three and a half minutes inside a
control plane, and nobody says the word until the very last card.

No GPU. No subscriptions. Python and PIL for the picture, ChipForge for the score,
FFmpeg to put it together. The voices are ElevenLabs. Everything else is code in a repo.

THE SATURDAY MACHINE is the same question from the
other end: it takes a lot, so choose your why. OG IN DA HOUSE
is where Plan 9 unmasks Bobby and finds Anubis underneath. And
AWS BRAINROT is Plan 9 rapping the AWS Solutions Architect
syllabus, which is the other half of the control plane.
